Advice: Volunteering
East Sussex Wildlife Rescue & Ambulance Service (WRAS) needs additional volunteers to help with the increased workload this year. By the start of May 2008 WRAS volunteers had dealt with an additional 300 incidents in comparison with the same period during 2007. WRAS deals with up 45 call-outs a day and between 2-3,000 incidents a year.
Volunteer Recruitment Meeting
Tuesday 27 May at Committee Room 1, Hailsham Leisure Centre, Vicarage Lane, Hailsham. Turn up at anytime between 6pm and 9.30pm.
Volunteer Rescuers
To be on call one or two full days a week or alternate weekends or 2-3 evenings a week; responding to emergency calls at short notice, helping to catch and transport casualties to and from veterinary establishments. You need a driving licence and own suitable transport plus a mobile phone.
Wildlife Guardians
To be available ad-hoc responding to emergencies calls and watching over a casualty until an ambulance or rescuer arrives on site. You need transport and a mobile phone.
Casualty Care Centre Volunteers
To be available on a rota system (minimum 1 morning or evening shift a week) to help clean and feed casualties under care at our Casualty Care Centre at Horsebridge. You need to be able to get to Horsebridge, must be reliable and need to be a good cleaner and not frightened of handling the animals if necessary to help those caring and treating the casualties. Suitable volunteer will have the opportunity to develop their skills and help with the care and treatment of casualties.
Volunteer Co-ordinator
We are looking for a Volunteer Co-ordinator to help book and arrange the volunteer rota for our Casualty Care Centre at Horsebridge. This role involves being available by phone to speak to volunteers and help sort out cover when volunteers are ill or on holiday. This person needs to be good with people as well as encouraging and enthusiastic.
Records Officer
We are looking for a volunteer to keep on top of the records which are kept of casualties in care and being rescues and to enter them onto a computer and either at home or at Horsebridge and to be able to help work out figures and details of what we have been called out to, treated and released etc. This person needs to be able to use a computer and be accurate in their entering of information.
Events Managers
We are looking for a couple of people to help with this role. This role comes with responsibility a small budget and for building up a team of fundraisers and helping to organise fundraising events like supermarket collections, sponsored events attending fairs and carnivals etc. This person needs to be motivated and good at taking the initiative and working with and encouraging other people.

Every year thousands of animals and birds are killed or seriously injured as a result of bonfires and fireworks at this time of year. There are some simple steps you can take to ensure that the number of casualties are keep to a minimum:
