Help protect wildlife during the bonfire celebrations

Hedgehog Every year thousands of animals and birds are killed or seriously injured as a result of bonfires and fireworks at this time of year. There are some simple steps you can take to ensure that the number of casualties are keep to a minimum:

1. Erect a wire mesh fence around your bonfire if building it in advance of your event to stop hedgehogs and other animals getting inside.

2. Move and rebuild your bonfire if it has not been protected by wire mesh the same day your intend to light it to ensure nothing is inside.

3. Light only one side of your bonfire to ensure that any animals or birds inside can escape out the far side of the bonfire, rather than cutting off their escape route and lighting it on all sides.

4. Have a bucket of water available in case you find a animal which is burnt.

5. Do not light fireworks close to or fire them in the direction of bushes and trees to avoid causing any damage to wildlife.
